More than 10,000 residents of Berekum and its surrounding communities in the Bono Region have benefited from a five-day free medical outreach organized by Ghana Medical Relief (GMR) in partnership with the Berekumman Citizens Association (BKMCA), iPHET, and other collaborators.
The outreach, held at the Holy Family Hospital in Berekum, ran from July 21–25, 2025, and provided essential healthcare services to residents who often face barriers to accessing specialized medical care. The program covered multiple disciplines, including general medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, urology, ophthalmology, and dental care, ensuring comprehensive health coverage for participants.
This year’s exercise recorded impressive figures:
-
10,026 patients received medical attention,
-
Over 18,000 prescriptions were dispensed,
-
576 dental procedures were performed,
-
760 eye examinations were conducted,
-
2,370 residents were enrolled in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS),
-
160 participants were certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), and
-
A total of 158 volunteers—drawn from both Ghana and the United States—supported the mission.
Beyond providing direct medical care, GMR also invested in long-term health sustainability by sponsoring NHIS registration for thousands of beneficiaries, enabling them to continue accessing healthcare services after the outreach. The inclusion of CPR training for Immigration Officers and senior high school students further reinforced the organization’s focus on empowering communities with lifesaving emergency skills.
A key partner in this year’s success was the Berekumman Citizens Association (BKMCA), whose immense local support ensured the smooth running of the program. The association provided accommodation for all visiting volunteers, coordinated local logistics, and spearheaded publicity efforts through its media partners, including BerekumCity.com, Berekumman TV, and other community outlets. Their contribution was instrumental in mobilizing residents, raising awareness, and ensuring the outreach reached even the most remote areas.
To support ongoing healthcare delivery, GMR donated medical equipment and supplies to the Holy Family Hospital, further strengthening the hospital’s capacity to provide quality care.
Since its establishment eight years ago, Ghana Medical Relief has provided free medical services to more than 50,000 people across six regions of Ghana through its annual July medical missions. Each edition brings together a diverse team of health professionals from Ghana and the United States who volunteer their expertise to promote community wellness and preventive healthcare.
At the closing ceremony, Dr. Samuel Owusu, President of Ghana Medical Relief, thanked the dedicated volunteers, local authorities, and collaborating organizations for their tireless support. He was joined by other GMR executives, including Dr. William Rockson, Richard Owusu, and Samuel Brobbey, who also commended the strong partnership with BKMCA and the Holy Family Hospital.
Dr. Owusu reaffirmed GMR’s commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare across Ghana, emphasizing that the Berekum outreach exemplified what collaboration, compassion, and community leadership can achieve.
“The success of this year’s outreach is a testament to what happens when citizens, professionals, and institutions come together for the common good,” he said. “We will continue to extend our services to reach more people in need and strengthen healthcare delivery across the country.”
The leadership of both GMR and BKMCA encouraged residents to prioritize regular health checkups and leverage the National Health Insurance Scheme to maintain long-term well-being. Together, they reaffirmed their shared goal of building a healthier and more resilient Berekum community.
