The queen of Kato, Nana Afia Siraa-Ababio III on Friday, 27th of January 2012, held a durbar to inaugurate the Asuama-Kyere Community Library Project (AKCOMLIP) at Kato.
The mobile library is one of the projects; Nana’s organization-Environment of Hope (EoHOPE) started about year ago to make an impact in the lives of the people of Kato, a suburb of Berekum.
In an address, Nana Afia Siraa-Ababio III elaborated on AKCOMLIP as follows;
AKCOMLIP is a human development intervention aimed at reaching out to as many underprivileged and vulnerable communities in order to meet their informational and educational needs.
AKCOMLIP is to promote lifelong learning and education by ensuring easy, free access to information materials through the community mobile library services with slogan, is Read A Book… A Week.
The main objectives of the project are
- To inculcate the habit of reading amongst children and the youth
- To enable the youth to spend quality leisure time reading
- To facilitate the teaching , learning and research in educational institutions
- To promote cultural heritage by creating access to reading material on diverse culture and various sources of information on cultural values.
Nana said one of the main motivations behind this project is that, “good governance which is embedded in accountability, will be a sham when the people who should hold leaders responsible and answerable for their stewardship, are not educated or well-informed”.
She went on to appeal to all well-wishers, corporate bodies, individuals ,philanthropists, the Ghana Library Board and particularly all the MMDAs in the Brong Ahafo Region and beyond for financial support so as to sustain the Project.
She further seeks for more efficient, faster and safer means of transportation to convey books and other materials to and from the service points. Also needed are tents, mobile library vans, and vehicles for monitoring purposes, more books, furniture, electric generators, video cameras and projectors.
Some of the sponsors for the project are EPP books, Afram Publications, Cowbell, Zoomlion, Ashfoam, the Ghana Library Board.
